Evan's Hoosiers First Record: Cutting Taxes for Hoosiers While Balancing the Budget

Press Release

Date: Oct. 12, 2016
Location: Indianapolis, IN

In the lead-up to next week's U.S. Senate debate, the Evan Bayh campaign will highlight Evan's long record of finding common sense, practical solutions as both Indiana's Governor and U.S. Senator that put Hoosier families first--the same approach he would bring back to Congress.

As Indiana Governor for eight years, Evan Bayh made his mark as a responsible steward of the state's finances who also put Hoosier families first.

During his two terms as Governor, Evan signed a balanced budget each and every year. What makes the record even more impressive is that he kept the state's budget in line while overseeing the largest tax cut in state history--$1.3 billion in tax cuts over six years. That meant that Hoosier families got $1.3 billion back to spend on a new home, a child's education, a new business or project, or even to put away for a rainy day.

Evan then brought his fiscally conservative, pro-Hoosier family values to Washington. As U.S. Senator, he supported a federal balanced budget amendment, believing that Washington should adhere to the same responsible budgeting practices as Indiana. At the same time, he consistently voted to cut taxes for Hoosier middle class families, supporting legislation to increase the child tax credit and creating a new property tax credit for homeowners.

If elected in November, Evan will continue to fight to rein in government spending, while also ensuring that our tax breaks go to Hoosier families and small businesses, not corporations who ship jobs overseas.
