Allen Votes to Halt Gitmo Transfers

Statement

Today, the House of Representatives passed legislation to prohibit the transfer of individuals detained at United States Naval Station, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. H.R. 5351 temporarily prohibits funds from being used to transfer or release individuals detained at Guantanamo Bay to the United States or a foreign country until the end of the year or the enactment of the National Defense Authorization Act for fiscal year 2017.

Rep. Rick Allen (R-Ga.-12) released the following statement in support:

"We have a solemn responsibility to protect and defend our country and its citizens, but that appears to have slipped the President's mind. In an effort to make good on his campaign promises, the President has been releasing Gitmo prisoners one after the next. Lest he forget, these prisoners were sent to Gitmo for a reason and letting them go back into the world is reckless and irresponsible. Not only that, but it is known some former detainees have returned to terrorism and their evil ways. This President needs to stop putting his own failed political legacy before the safety of the American people. I am proud to support this bill and I urge my colleagues in the Senate to immediately take up this measure in the interest of national security."
