Holding the VA Accountable

Statement

Date: Sept. 14, 2016
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Veterans

The U.S. House of Representatives has passed H.R. 5620, the VA Accountability First and Appeals Modernization Act. Congressman Bill Flores (R-Texas) released the following statement regarding passage of the bill:

"It is imperative that the VA put the care of our nation's veterans first. They deserve to know that their health care and benefits are in competent hands. Sadly, there have been many instances of mismanagement and misconduct because VA employees continue to avoid being held accountable for their actions. This is inexcusable and has led to scandal and poor performance from the VA both in health care and the processing of benefits. The VA Accountability First and Appeals Modernization Act provides the VA Secretary with authority to discipline employees for performance or misconduct, strengthens whistleblower protections and reforms the disability benefits appeals process for veterans. We have an obligation to our nation's veterans to ensure that the VA is put on a path to success. With passage of this important bill we are improving accountability and moving closer to creating a VA for the 21st century."

Congressman Bill Flores represents the 17th District of Texas and is an entrepreneur, former energy executive, Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Chairman of the Republican Study Committee (RSC) and member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee.
