Murphy Denounces North Korea For Fifth Nuclear Test, Calls For Immediate Response

Statement

Date: Sept. 9, 2016
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Murphy (R-PA) issued the following statement on North Korea conducting it's fifth nuclear test today:

"North Korea's continued defiance requires an immediate and major response from the United States. If the U.S. does not apply direct, substantial sanctions, North Korea will continue to act with unbridled provocation and threaten the free world. Earlier this year, Congress gave the President sanction authorities against North Korea. As our Commander-in-Chief, he needs to utilize these authorities to the fullest extent."

In February 2016, the House passed, and Congressman Murphy supported, the North Korea Sanctions and Policy Enhancement Act (H.R. 757), which requires the President to investigate any sanctionable activities involving North Korea and also gives him the power to apply those sanctions.
