McCaskill Reacts to FDA Decision on Vinpocetine

Statement

Date: Sept. 8, 2016
Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill today issued the following statement after the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) made the decision that the substance vinpocetine was not a dietary ingredient:

"It's good news that the FDA is aiming to take stock of the scientific work of third-party researchers. That said, the fact remains that oversight of the dietary supplements that Americans take every day remains alarmingly inadequate. We cannot and should not wait around for outside research or tragedy in this space to spur us to action, and I look forward to working with the FDA to improve the health and safety of all American consumers."

McCaskill had previously encouraged the FDA to pull the ingredient from shelves after scientific studies last year concluded that vinpocetine was not a naturally occurring substance.
