House Passes Legislation Allowing Families of 9/11 Victims to Seek Financial Compensation from Foreign Sponsors of Terrorism

Statement

Date: Sept. 9, 2016
Location: Washington, DC

Today, U.S. Representative Candice Miller (MI-10), Vice Chair of the House Homeland Security Committee, issued the following statement after the House passed the Justice Against Sponsors of Terrorism Act (S. 2040), legislation that allows families of victims of international acts of terror to seek financial justice from foreign states in U.S. courts:

"Today, the House passed legislation that allows the families of victims of terror to sue countries, such as Saudi Arabia, that fund radical organizations like ISIS and Hamas, organizations that carry out heinous acts of international terror. As we approach the 15th anniversary of the largest terrorist attack on U.S. soil, this legislation finally allows the families of 9/11 victims to hold these foreign governments accountable for their actions. I know that nothing can ever rectify the loss these families have experienced, but I hope this helps bring some measure of justice for their loved ones."
