Local Government Assistance (LGA) was initiated to help communities that do not have authority to charge a sales tax keep property taxes low. It is a way to assist small or rural communities pay for items such as fire trucks or defray cost with park upkeep. When a major population center, that has authority to charge a sales tax on top of state and county taxes, receives LGA funding, it becomes nothing more than another revenue stream.
Cities that have authority to charge a sales tax should be precluded from receiving any LGA funding.
