Bryan Caforio Releases College Affordability Plan

Today, Bryan Caforio, candidate in California's 25th Congressional District, released his college affordability plan, which would expand college loan forgiveness opportunities, encourage public service, boost employment options, and facilitate early participation in the American economy.

"Like millions of other Americans, my wife Lisa and I depended on student loans to get our degrees. I understand the pressure to repay those loans, and how those loans can act as an albatross weighing people down for decades after graduation," said Caforio. "That risk discourages many young people from pursuing advanced degrees, limits the jobs recent graduates can consider, and reduces the capital available for graduates to spend in our economy. In Congress, I will immediately start working to implement common-sense solutions to make college education affordable."

Highlights of the Caforio College Affordability Plan include:

Expanding Loan Forgiveness Opportunities and Encouraging Public Service

Provides recent graduates with increased opportunities to forgive their student debt by undertaking public service employment.

Allowing Students to Refinance Student Loans

Allows students to refinance federal student loan debt just as many Americans refinance car loans, home mortgages, and credit cards.

American Opportunity Tax Credit Expansion

Allows an income tax credit of up to $3,000 for qualified tuition and related expenses.

Allowing Students to Discharge Student Debt in Bankruptcy

Reclassifies private student loan debt under the tax code to make it easier for borrowers to obtain relief through bankruptcy when necessary and appropriate.

Protecting Students from Deceitful College Practices

Institutes a complaint tracking system to report student grievances, toughens sanctions for violations, and improves consumer protections for students.

Caforio was born and raised in Southern California by two public school teachers, attended UCLA and Yale Law School, worked for a United States federal judge, and practices as an attorney taking on some of the world's biggest banks. Bryan lives in Santa Clarita with his wife Lisa, who serves as a Deputy City Attorney at the Los Angeles City Attorney's Office.

The 25th District covers northern Los Angeles County and part of Ventura County including the Antelope Valley, Palmdale, Lancaster, Santa Clarita, and Simi Valley. President Obama won the district in 2008, and experts consider the race a toss-up this year. Last year Democratic registration eclipsed Republican registration for the first time, and the district is now majority-minority. National Republicans list Congressman Knight as one of their most vulnerable incumbents.
