U.S. Senator Mark Kirk (R-Ill.) today issued a statement in response to the Department of Defense (DoD) announcement that 15 Guantanamo Bay terrorist detainees have been transferred to the United Arab Emirates, the single largest transfer during this Administration:
"The Administration is continuing to rapidly transfer Gitmo terrorist detainees without real accountability measures in place," said Senator Kirk. "With reports that 30 percent of former Gitmo detainees suspected or confirmed of reengaging in terrorism, including Ibrahim Al-Qosi, who re-emerged as Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula's Chief Recruiter in December 2015, details of the transfer agreements should be made public to the American taxpayer."
Senator Kirk introduced Gitmo "transparency and accountability" amendments to require the Administration to provide the American taxpayer with full details of any agreement related to transferring Gitmo terrorist detainees to foreign nations, and to cut U.S. foreign aid to any country that accepts a former Gitmo terrorist detainee and loses track of them.
