Reid Statement on 15 Million Private-Sector Jobs

Statement

Date: Aug. 5, 2016
Location: Las Vegas, NV

Nevada Senator Harry Reid released the following statement after July's employment report showed more than 15 million private-sector jobs have been created over the last 77 months. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the economy added 255,000 jobs in July.

"Today marks a historic milestone for America's economy. Over the last 77 months, we've experienced the longest streak in private-sector job growth on record, cut the unemployment rate by half and shrunk the deficit by more than two-thirds. Thanks to President Obama's leadership and Democratic policies in Congress -- and despite unprecedented Republican obstruction and gridlock -- our economy has clawed back from one of the worst economic crises in modern history. But there is still much more to be done.

"This historic jobs report should be a call to action. It is time for Republicans to stand up to extreme far-right voices and join with Democrats to build on this monumental progress. Rather than spending the longest summer vacation in decades trying to elect Donald Trump and enact his dangerous policies, Republicans should work with us to further boost our economy by focusing on middle class priorities. Every American should benefit from our nation's economic growth. There are far too many who haven't.

"Democrats remain committed to taking on the wealthy special interests who have tried to rig the system for the super-rich and big corporations. We will continue advocating for investments in jobs, infrastructure, education and health care -- all while pushing for fair wages and the belief that women should receive equal pay for equal work. We will do everything possible to protect and strengthen America's middle class. Our economy must work for everyone, not just those at the top. Democrats will continue fighting to give everyone a fair shot, and we call on Republicans to join us in this effort."
