Issue Position: Education

Issue Position

Brad has a deep appreciation for our schools. He is a product of our local schools, his wife Shawna is a certificated teacher, and their two boys attend a public elementary school. Also, as a former Eastmont School Board President and with past service on the House K-12 Education Committee, Brad understands that school systems in our state must be fiscally responsible. Public education must be adaptive, flexible, and locally-controlled. It must demonstrate continuous improvement for the benefits of all children. Brad believes, as the State Constitution declares, that education is the paramount duty of the state. As the economy grows, legislators should grow the state's cash reserves and appropriately fund education as opposed to creating new governmental programs and raising taxes.

During Brad's four years in office as State Representative, the legislature increased education investments by $2.9 billion without the tax increases sought by special interests. Brad also understands and appreciates the role of private schools, home schooling, and online opportunities in meeting the needs of children and families. Brad believes that all students are unique and learn differently, which is why legislators should equip all children with opportunities to succeed. Brad also believes that the state must not layer continual reforms on the educational system, create unnecessary mandates that drive hard-working teachers out of the profession, and over-test students. Brad believes in rigor and accountability, but prefers that students be tested less so that they can learn more.
