Location: East Hartford, CT
Issues: Elections

Today, Rep. John B. Larson (CT-01) announced he was continuing his tradition of honoring longtime Democratic activists and pioneers by selecting Maureen Moriarty, as his guest to the Democratic National Convention (DNC) in Philadelphia. At past conventions, he has sponsored former Hartford mayors Thirman Milner and Carrie Saxon Perry, community leader and retired Hartford firefighter Steve Harris, and activist Janice Fleming.

Moriarty's lifetime of service to the Democratic Party started in the 1960s when she volunteered for East Hartford luminaries Jimmy Fitzgerald, Frank Fitzgerald, and Dick Torpey. She got her start in government working for the Connecticut General Assembly (CGA), including the Democratic House Leadership and the Democratic Senate Leadership. In 1980, she worked on her first presidential race for the Carter/Mondale campaign in Hartford. There she met another future boss, Peter Kelly. Following Moriarty's work on the O'Neill for Governor campaign, she accepted Kelly's offer to move to Washington and work for the Democratic National Committee. Later, Moriarty would work for Sen. John Glenn and help organize numerous other campaigns until 1997, when she accepted a position on Larson's campaign to replace retiring Rep. Barbara Kennelly. Moriarty currently serves as Larson's District Director in his Hartford Office.

"I can think of no one more deserving of the opportunity to see the first woman accept a major party's nomination than Maureen Moriarty," said Larson. "Maureen has a long history of service to the Democratic party, the state of Connecticut, and our country. She has been a selfless worker and a devoted friend, and I am honored to have her join me in Philadelphia to watch Hillary Clinton make history."

Larson is giving Moriarty his floor pass to see Hillary Clinton formally accept the Democratic nomination for President of the United States. He will return home on Thursday, July 28th to host a DNC Watch Party at the Larson for Congress Headquarters (265 Ellington Rd, East Hartford, CT 06108) from 6:30 -- 9:30 PM.
Moriarty lives in West Hartford with her husband, Jeff Baver. Her daughter, Moriah Moriarty, lives in East Hartford and currently serves as Vice Chair of the East Hartford Democratic Town Committee.
