Issue Position: Our Heroes

Issue Position

You don't have to look very far to find a hero. Look to the police officer directing traffic, or the firefighter waiting for a call. Look to the EMT and the nurse, or to your children's teachers. Look only as far as the next man or woman who has worn the uniform to protect our freedom. They're all heroes, and we owe them a lot more than words of thanks.
TREAT TEACHERS LIKE THE PROFESSIONALS THEY ARE

Give parents more options and allow teachers more flexibility

Improve pay and benefits for teachers

Reward excellence in the classroom

NEW PROTECTIONS FOR FIRST RESPONDERS

As an emergency physician, Dr. Green knows too well about violent attacks on health care workers, police and other first responders. Among the bills Dr. Green authored that have been signed into law are provisions that:

Crack down on those who assault police officers

Give emergency medical workers the same protections as police officers

Expand Workers' Compensation protections for firefighters

WELCOMING HOME OUR RETURNING HEROES

As a decorated combat veteran Dr. Green knows how important it is to help our returning veterans adjust to civilian life. Just a few of the pro-veteran bills sponsored by Dr. Green:

Allow in-state tuition for returning veterans

Protect the jobs of soldiers while deployed

Give recent vets the option of receiving college physical education credit hours for basic training they received in the armed services

Permit the children of soldiers killed in action to attend voluntary Pre-K and avoid wait lists at day care facilities

Cut red tape that used to keep military drivers from getting Tennessee Commercial Drivers' licenses

Allocated state dollars to a program to counsel PTSD sufferers resulting in zero suicides among Tennessee Guardsmen in 2014
