Rangel Commemorates the Americans with Disabilities Act

Statement

Date: July 26, 2016
Location: New York, NY

Congressman Charles B. Rangel, who represents the 13th Congressional District of New York that includes Upper Manhattan and parts of the Bronx, released the following statement commemorating the 26th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act:

"The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) remains one of our nation's most comprehensive civil rights measures aimed at prohibiting discrimination against people with disabilities in employment, transportation, public accommodations, and local governmental services.

In our congressional district, one in eight people who are eligible to work reports having a disability. I am proud to say that the ADA has made our community more inclusive, from creating specific resources to advancing city programs that teach people with disabilities the skills required for independent living.

As we reflect on the indisputable progress in increasing employment and education opportunities for those with disabilities, we must acknowledge the disparity that still exists. I will continue the fight to build on the promise of the ADA by supporting legislation that further protects and expands accessibility in public accommodations for the disabled community."
