McCain on First Anniversary of Dangerous Iran Deal-

Press Release

U.S. Senator John McCain (R-AZ), Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, released the following statement today on the one year anniversary of the signing of President Obama's Iran Nuclear Deal:

"Today marks one year since the signing of President Obama's reckless Iran Deal. The Obama Administration made concession after concession to Iran, producing a deal that did not cut off Iran's path to a nuclear weapon, but paved the way for a new one. The Iran Deal unshackled the theocratic regime's pursuit of advanced military capabilities, including missiles that can target Israel, Europe, and someday the U.S. homeland. And it poured billions of dollars on the world's number one state sponsor of terrorism to fuel further destabilization of the Middle East and undermine U.S. national security interests.

"But the White House never let these facts interfere with its political narrative. We have since learned from the aspiring fiction writer who serves as one of the President's top aides that the White House manipulated and, in some cases, manufactured facts to sell the reckless Iran Deal to the American people as a prelude to détente with Iran and disengagement from the Middle East.

"Unfortunately, Iran's dangerous and belligerent behavior in the aftermath of the nuclear deal is not fiction and has not altered Iran's hate of the West generally or the United States more specifically. Over the last year, Iran has fired rockets near a U.S. aircraft carrier, conducted ballistic missile tests in violation of United Nations resolutions, and continued to support the murderous Assad regime and terrorist networks that undermine the very fabric of international standards and institutions. And most significantly, Iran detained 10 U.S. sailors at gunpoint in a flagrant violation of international law, a deliberate provocation that was met with craven statements of gratitude and praise from the Obama Administration.

"It is long past time for President Obama to set aside his narrative, put national security ahead of personal legacy, and finally put in place a comprehensive strategy and the necessary resources to counter Iran's malign influence and protect American interests."
