Crowley Presents Congressional Resolution to First US Public Kindergarten in College Point
7/7/2005

Queens, NY- Today, Congressman Joseph Crowley, Chief Deputy Whip, presented a framed copy of the Congressional Resolution (H.CON.RES.47) commending the establishment of the first free public kindergarten in the United States in College Point, to Susan Brustman, the Executive Director of the Poppenhusen Institute. Crowley was also joined by Jim Driscoll, Vice President of History at the Queens History Society and teachers from the Queens public school system.

"As a native of Queens I grew up learning about the history of this community, which includes the creation of the first free public kindergarten in the United States. For some children kindergarten is the first ground where they interact with students from a myriad of cultural, economic, racial and religious backgrounds forming the base for their views on the world and themselves. It is an honor for the local community that the great educational tradition of kindergarten began right here," commented Crowley.
