Issue Position: Securing Social Security

Issue Position

Date: Jan. 1, 2016

The Social Security Trust Fund was created to ensure individuals had a sustained income after retirement. It is only fair that each individual receives from the system what they paid into it. We are fighting to ensure the Retirement fund and the Disability Insurance (DI) fund do not run out of money.

We care about protecting retirees and ensuring they receive the money they deserve and were promised.

It is only fair that we fight for individuals who need and depend on disability benefits. The DI program was created in order to provide replacement income for workers who have become temporarily or permanently disabled. As a result of declining funds, the disability program was set to run out of money by late 2016 without Congressional intervention. This would have resulted in a twenty percent reduction in benefits to all recipients. To prevent this, Congress acted and passed the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2015 in late October.

The Congressional Bipartisan Budget Act of 2015 was signed into law in late October. This legislation works to prevent the trust fund's bankruptcy as this vital program oversees the distribution of benefits to over 10 million people, thousands of whom call our district home. The Bipartisan Budget Act included some of the following reforms:

Encouraging independence by creating a path to return to work
Modernizing the wage reporting methods
Promoting fairness through stronger anti-fraud penalties
Protecting beneficiaries through program integrity
