Rep. Brat Statement on The Separation of Powers Restoration Act

Statement

Date: July 12, 2016
Location: Washington, DC

Today the House passed the Separation of Powers Restoration Act (SOPRA) to curb Federal agencies' rulemaking authority. The bill gives courts, rather than agencies, the task of ruling and interpreting on questions of law for both statutes and regulations.

"Federal regulations cost our economy $1.88 trillion. This bill is desperately needed to rein in the growth of the Federal regulatory state which is currently strangling American businesses," said Rep. Dave Brat. "For too long, Americans have suffered under punishing regulations imposed by unelected bureaucrats. This bill will stop the over-expansion of federal bureaucracy and its encroachment on fundamental liberties. I am a proud co-sponsor of this bill because it is time for Congress to work for the American people, and reassert its Constitutional authority."
