Issue Position: Spending and Debt

Issue Position

Date: Jan. 1, 2016

Most Americans agree that the expansion of our federal government has been fueled by outrageous growth in federal spending on borrowed money that must end. During President Obama's time in office alone, the federal debt held by the public has more than doubled.

In order to ensure our children and grandchildren are given the same opportunities we have enjoyed, we must continue tightening the purse strings and balance the budget. Congress has adopted a budget that balances for the first time in years and federal spending has dropped for the first time in decades. We must continue to cut wasteful federal spending and redirect limited funds to federal priorities such as national defense and protecting programs Americans rely on such as Social Security and Medicare. Taking these commonsense steps now will ensure that the federal budget is on sound footing for decades and that our children and grandchildren face a future of opportunity, not debt.
