Today, Congresswoman Louise M. Slaughter (NY-25) released the following statement on the shooting that killed five police officers and wounded several others in Dallas:
"We are all mourning the horrific ambush and murder of police officers during the peaceful protest in Dallas, which marked the deadliest attack on law enforcement in the U.S. since 9/11. This is yet another tragic reminder of the sacrifice made by law enforcement to keep us safe and the dangers posed by weapons designed to kill. Acts of violence have become far too common in communities across the country, including the recent fatal shootings of Philando Castile in Minnesota and Alton Sterling in Louisiana. The sad reality is that 91 people are killed by a gun every single day in America. Since Sandy Hook, there have been close to a thousand mass shootings where three or more people have lost their lives. This violence has left our nation in a state of perpetual mourning with the constant fear that when our loved ones leave the house, we may never see them again. We must turn this grief into action by working together to end the violence in our communities and ensure equality and justice for all."
