Statement

Date: July 12, 2016
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Charles B. Rangel, who represents the 13th Congressional District of New York that includes Upper Manhattan and parts of the Bronx, released the following statement in response to President Obama's address in Dallas, TX:

"I join President Barack Obama in urging the nation to promote healing as we grieve with the families of the fallen Dallas Police Officers. Following a recent series of violent acts, our President makes clear the importance of us coming together as a country now more than ever. We must begin working together to create lasting peace in our streets.

It is possible to confront the realities of racism in American while also honoring the public service of our police officers. We can support everyone as equal parts of the American family, no matter the color of their skin or the badge on their chest. Senseless murder is senseless murder, and there is no justification for that.

The five men who were killed while serving their communities and country represent the best of America. I am proud to stand with President Obama as we honor their memory and sacrifices. Let us recognize and thank the selflessness of these officers and all those who protect our nation."
