Kirk Statement on Former Guantanamo Terrorist Detainee Missing in Brazil

Statement

Date: July 6, 2016
Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Senator Mark Kirk (R-Ill.) issued a statement after Avianca Brazil Airlines warned employees that Abu Wa'el Dhiab, a 44-year-old Syrian national and former Guantanamo Bay terrorist detainee whom the United States and Brazil are searching for in South America, may attempt to fly using a fake passport. Dhiab, who is also known as "Jihad Ahmed Mustafa Dhiab,' recently snuck into Brazil after the Administration released him from Gitmo to the custody of Uruguay in 2014.

"The Administration should face the reality that releasing hardened terrorists from Guantanamo Bay is dangerous and even deadly, especially after it was revealed 12 former Gitmo detainees are responsible for terrorist attacks that have killed six Americans," Senator Kirk said. "It's just as alarming to see former Gitmo detainee Abu Wa'el Dhiab has disappeared in Brazil weeks before the 2016 Olympics in Rio, as it was to see former Gitmo detainee Ibrahim al-Qosi, a bodyguard to Osama bin Laden, recently resurfaced as the chief terrorist recruiter for Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula."
