Congresswoman Donna F. Edwards (MD-4) released the following statement to commemorate Father's Day, observed on June 19, 2016.

"On Father's Day we honor the men who made us who we are today. Fathers are often among the first role models we have in life who inspire us to reach higher and achieve our goals. Being a father can be difficult in a complicated world, yet it is vital," said Congresswoman Edwards.

"Fathers are critical to the success of the next generation. Father's Day is not only about remembrance and appreciation, it is also an opportunity for a continued national dialogue on mentorship from early childhood into adulthood. Children need their fathers to be present in their lives and fathers must be there for them. A great nation provides fathers with the tools and opportunity to provide a nurturing and safe home for their children.

"On a personal note, although my Dad is no longer with us, I call on his love, wise words, guidance, humor, compassion, and strength each day. On this Father's Day, he remains my touch stone.

"As we celebrate this year, cherish this day with your loved ones. I wish every father, mentor, and family across our nation a Happy Father's Day."
