Rep. Lujan Joins Sit In Calling for Action to Keep Guns Out of the Hands of Suspected Terrorists

For more than 24 hours, House Democrats sat on the floor of the House of Representatives yesterday and today and called for a vote on commonsense legislation that keeps guns out of the hands of suspected terrorists and expands background checks.

"I was proud to stand with my colleagues, led by civil rights leader John Lewis, to say that, in the wake of the acts of terror and hate in Orlando, that it is time to act on sensible reforms that will make the American people safer," Congressman Luján said. "Time and again, on the House floor, we have held moments of silence in memory of the victims of Orlando, San Bernardino, Newtown, and more. A moment of silence alone is simply not enough to honor the lives of those we have lost. We need action to keep guns out of the hands of those on the FBI Terrorist Watch List and have mandatory background checks, and that begins with a vote on the House floor."

Luján spoke on the House floor earlier today, highlighting House Republicans' efforts to stifle debate.

"Republican Speaker Paul Ryan turned off the cameras, cut off the microphones, and tried to silence the voices of the American people. But we did not stay silent. With CNN reporting that more than 90 percent of Americans are in favor of background checks, 85 percent of Americans are in support of preventing suspected terrorists from buying guns, it is clear how out of touch House Republicans are on this issue. I will continue to stand with my colleagues and the people of New Mexico who are calling for action on this commonsense legislation."
