Rangel Deplores Supreme Court Decision on DACA and DAPA

Statement

Date: June 23, 2016
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Charles B. Rangel, who represents the 13th Congressional District of New York that includes Upper Manhattan and parts of the Bronx, released the following statement on the 4-4 vote of United States v. Texas which challenges President Obama's Executive Action on Immigration to expand Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) and create Deferred Action for Parents of Americans and Lawful Permanent Residents (DAPA):

"I am deeply disappointed by the Supreme Court's ruling against President Barack Obama's Executive Action on DAPA and the expansion of DACA. This is a major setback for America and for the millions of families who have been anxiously awaiting this decision. The SCOTUS had an opportunity to provide clarity for the nation but failed. They failed the American people, and our communities will continue to suffer as a result.

While today's outcome does not impact the original DACA legislation from 2012, it puts millions of American families in limbo and at risk of being torn apart. President Obama's efforts to expand DACA and DAPA have allowed many people to come out of the shadows and live without fear of deportation or separation from their loved ones. It has allowed numerous young men and women to seek higher education and strengthen our workforce. We must keep fighting to provide a path towards citizenship for those who call America their home.

We will fight until every immigrant in our community and in our country can live in dignity. These executive programs are commonsense actions to fix our broken immigration system while we wait for full and comprehensive immigration reform. The fight is not over, keep the faith."
