Rangel Marks the Anniversary of Title IX

Statement

Date: June 23, 2016
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Charles B. Rangel, who represents the 13th Congressional District of New York that includes Upper Manhattan and parts of the Bronx, released the following statement marking the anniversary of the passage of Title IX:

"This June 23rd marks the 44th anniversary of the passage of Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972. Title IX has protected millions of people, especially women and recently members of the LGBT community, from discrimination in educational institutions across the country. This law required that equal resources be allocated to men's and women's programs, significantly increasing opportunities for women.

Title IX also bolstered women's access to the full range of academic subjects, and a wide range of careers; however, many educational programs mandated by the law have fallen short of protecting the populations they serve from sexual discrimination, harassment, and assault. On June 6, 2016, the nation watched in horror as a 20-year old man was sentenced to a mere 6 months in prison for the rape of an unconscious woman. As shocking as this case was, it is only one of many that exemplify the need to do more to prevent sexual assault on college campuses. Current laws, including Title IX, are not enough. In addition, nearly 250 education institutions are currently under investigation for the possible mishandling of sexual violence cases -- with many more Title IX violations going unnoticed.

As we celebrate the anniversary of Title IX and recognize the many efforts to end sexual violence on college campuses, including the President and Vice President's Its On Us Campaign, let us remember that more work must be done to create a truly equal and safe collegiate experience for all students. Ensuring that everyone can receive a high quality education has always been one of my life's top priorities. I will continue to work towards sex and gender equality for all."
