Rep. Maloney Celebrates Presidential Designation of the new Stonewall National Monument

Following the White House's announcement today that President Obama will designate a new national monument at the historic site of the Stonewall Uprising in New York City to honor the broad movement for LGBT equality, Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney (NY-12) released the following statement:

"This tribute is well deserved and has been a long-time coming. Stonewall helped launch one of the great civil rights movements in our nation's history. And as we celebrate LGBT Equality Day, while still mourning the loss of the 49 people in Orlando, this designation is another step in our country's long march towards forming a more perfect union.

"This National Monument at Stonewall will help tell the story of the LGBT community's fight for equal rights in America, and is integral to fully incorporating the diverse range of LGBT experiences into our nation's history. The events around Stonewall beginning in 1969 honor unique stories of American history, and its legacy is a part of the push for human rights and civil rights in the United States.

"I applaud the President and his Administration on this designation and I look forward celebrating all of the progress we've made to advance the rights of all Americans at New York City's Pride festival this weekend."
