U.S. Sen. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) today applauded the Senate Appropriations Committee's approval of an amendment offered by U.S. Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) that would restore the freedom of U.S. citizens to travel to Cuba.
Flake and Leahy -- with the support of a bipartisan coalition of 50 additional senators -- have introduced standalone legislation (S. 299) that would end restrictions in laws enacted in 1996 and 2000 on travel by American citizens and legal residents to Cuba. These restrictions do not exist for travel by Americans to any other country in the world.
"With the support of 52 individual senators, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and now the Senate Appropriations Committee, it's time we had a full and open debate on legislation to restore the freedom of U.S. citizens to travel to Cuba," said Flake.
