With Cameras Turned Off, Former Journalist Turned Congresswoman Bustos Snapchats Behind-the-Scenes Look at Democracy In Action

Location: Washington, DC

Over the last 24 hours, Congresswoman Cheri Bustos (IL-17) used her Snapchat account to give followers a behind-the-scenes view of House Democrats' sit-in protest on the House Floor to demand a vote on gun violence prevention legislation. Because the Republican Majority put the House in recess to turn off CSPAN's cameras during the protest, as a former journalist, Bustos took it upon herself to start interviewing Members of Congress about the significance of this protest on her Snapchat account.

After staying on the floor of the House throughout the night, Bustos spoke at 6:45 am today about the importance of bringing common-sense legislation to the floor to prevent terrorists from buying guns and expanding criminal background checks to prevent violent offenders from getting deadly weapons.

"The American people and the people I serve in Illinois deserve to see that we are fighting for them - that we are advocating for common-sense legislation to reduce gun violence in our communities," Congresswoman Bustos said. "Since the cameras were turned off, and we were literally left to our own devices, I used Snapchat to give my constituents and followers a behind-the-scenes look into this historic protest - and I hope they will continue to follow along and see that we are advocating for common-sense legislation to keep our families safe. If Washington Republicans are against common sense legislation to prevent terrorists from buying guns, they should at least hold an up or down vote so their constituents can know where they stand."
