Ayotte: Benghazi Suspect Should be Held at Gitmo

Statement

Date: May 12, 2016
Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Senator Kelly Ayotte today released the following statement regarding reports that the Justice Department will move forward with the prosecution in U.S. civilian courts of Ahmed Abu Khattala and will not seek the death penalty. Khattala is suspected to be the ring leader of the terrorist attacks on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi in 2012.

"As I said when he was captured, as a terrorist who orchestrated an attack that killed Americans and was captured by U.S. special forces, Khattala should have been taken to Guantanamo and detained as an enemy combatant in order to collect the intelligence necessary to prevent future attacks," said Senator Ayotte. "Instead of reading him his Miranda rights and treating him like a common criminal, the administration should treat this terrorist responsible for the murder of four brave Americans for what he is-an enemy combatant at war with our country who should be detained at Guantanamo."
