Boustany Applauds Supreme Court Decision Upholding the Constitution, Stopping Executive Amnesty

Press Release

Date: June 23, 2016
Location: Washington, DC

Dr. Charles Boustany (R-Lafayette) issued the following statement after the Supreme Court upheld a lower court's ruling that denied the President's executive actions to expand the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program and to create the Deferred Action for Parents of Americans and Lawful Permanent Residents (DAPA) program.

Boustany said: The Supreme Court's ruling goes much further than immigration policy; it affirms our United States Constitution. The House of Representatives is elected by the American people as the law-making body of this country. The President cannot use his executive authority to arbitrarily write laws. I applaud the Supreme Court for upholding the Constitution and putting a stop to the Administration's executive amnesty."

On November 20, 2014, President Obama issued a series of executive actions to increase protections for illegal aliens by expanding the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program and creating the Deferred Action for Parents of Americans and Lawful Permanent Residents (DAPA) program. In response to the White House's actions, over 25 states or state officials, including Louisiana, filed suit against the President on the grounds that these executive actions exceed the scope of executive authority.

In March of 2016, Congress passed a resolution authorizing the Speaker of the House to file an amicus brief with the Supreme Court formally opposing the President's executive amnesty in UnitedStates v. Texas. Prior to supporting the amicus brief resolution, Boustany also supported the states' case against the Administration by signing two other amicus briefs at both the U.S. Districts Court and U.S. Court of Appeals levels.
