NJ.com - LGBT Rights Support a Plus for Norcross

Op-Ed

By Steve Burch

As a happily married gay man, I support of Donald Norcross for Congress with respect to his efforts in the area of equal rights. (Incumbent Norcross, D-1st Dist., faces Alex Law for the Democrats' 1st Dist. U.S. House nomination in the June 7 primary.)

I've witnessed the positive impact of Norcross' support and fight for LGBT equality for many years. Having worked in community-based programs where I had many opportunities to see and speak to the congressman, I found him to be well-educated and concerned about the lack of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender equality in our communities.

He has supported efforts to ensure LGBT students are not discriminated against by their schools. (H.R. 846: Student Non-Discrimination Act). He also supported efforts for the Pentagon to correct records of service members who received less than an honorable discharge solely because of their sexual orientation.

Norcross played an active role in strongly supporting the U.S. Supreme Court's decision to ensure that all those in committed, loving relationships, regardless of sexual orientation, have the right to marry. With a monumental year for marriage equality now behind us, the congressman remains a member of the LGBT Equality Caucus and continues to work toward the extension of equal rights for everyone.
