Murphy Votes for Bipartisan Bill to Restore Stability & Opportunity for Puerto Rico

Statement

Date: June 29, 2016
Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) released the following statement Wednesday after voting to advance the bipartisan Puerto Rico Oversight, Management, and Economic Stability Act (PROMESA Act) of 2016:

"The crisis in Puerto Rico isn't abstract -- hospitals are running out of supplies, vital human services are being severely curtailed. While this isn't the bill I would have written, I've heard directly from the people of Puerto Rico and the Puerto Rican community in Connecticut, about the need to pass this legislation now, in order to begin the process of financial reform. I'm hopeful that this bill will help Puerto Rico begin to right the ship and restore stability on the island."

The Senate voted 68-32 to invoke cloture, advancing the PROMESA Act and indicating widespread bipartisan support for the measure.
