Heitkamp Announces Federal Funding for Research at North Dakota State University

U.S. Senator Heidi Heitkamp announced two federal grants totaling over $580,000 in federal funding that will support the study of animal behavior and biofuel production at North Dakota State University (NDSU).

"Agriculture and energy have long been key pieces of North Dakota's economy," said Heitkamp. "North Dakota State University has led our state in agriculture and energy innovation to harness the full potential of our states natural resources. Today's federal funds will continue this research in the fields of animal science and biofuel development that will push North Dakota forward."

These federal funds are distributed as follows:

North Dakota State University - $390,000 in initial federal funding to study the correlation between behaviors in animals. The research project is titled "Collaborative Research: Behavioral Syndromes as Evolutionary

Constraints: the Role of Genetic Architecture". The federal grant is made available is several disbursements as the research continues with the total amount intended to be $590,000.

North Dakota State University - $191,934 in federal funding to research the production of biofuels. The project is titled "Collaborative Research: Engineering of Recoverable Cellulosomes for Biomass Conversion".

These federal funds are made available through the National Science Foundation.
