Our Police and Firefighters deserve our prayers and support
Unfortunately, there are some who devalue the important role that police and firefighters play in our community. They are trying to balance the state budget by cutting public safety pensions. That's just wrong and makes no sense. In Sacramento, I will work to bring more police and firefighters to our local communities. I will also honor their work by protecting their long term security.
Smart Solutions to fighting crime
We've all heard the statistics--the United States has more people incarcerated than any other industrialized nation in the world. While it's very clear that dangerous criminals belong behind bars--there are too many people incarcerated today that could be living productive lives and caring for their families. The process of separating dangerous criminals from low level offenders starts with effective juvenile diversion programs.
In the state Capitol, I will work to bring innovative diversion programs to our communities. And work with local police and the sheriff department to implement them. These programs will provide:
* Diversion opportunities such as sports leagues and arts programs for first time offenders.
* A thorough evaluation by mental health, faith-based, law enforcement and education professionals to properly divert first time offenders.
* Mental health and addiction recovery services.
* Career training opportunities.
