Location: Washington, DC

Senator Cory Gardner (R-CO) introduced an amendment to S.2943, the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2017 (NDAA), which provides funding for the Department of Defense (DoD). The amendment expresses that Cheyenne Mountain Air Force Station (CMAFS) is an indispensable national security asset that is essential to the defense of North America.

A facility that operates as the alternate command control center for the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) and the United States Northern Command (NORTHCOM), Cheyenne Mountain facilitates integration with NORAD for defense of the homeland. The United States and Canada have both made significant and irreplaceable infrastructure investments to support NORAD and Cheyenne Mountain, and Cheyenne Mountain's unique infrastructure allows for the daily and contingent operations at NORTHCOM.

"The Cheyenne Mountain facility has played an essential role in our country's national defense for decades," said Gardner. "My amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act recognizes that Cheyenne Mountain is an asset to Colorado and North America and celebrates the facility's contributions to protecting the homeland for the past 50 years. I will continue to do everything I can to support the base as well as the service members and civilians who work at Cheyenne Mountain."

Cheyenne Mountain celebrated its 50th anniversary in April. Gardner attended the anniversary celebration and also introduced a resolution celebrating the facility's milestone.
