Statement of U.S. Secretary of Education John B. King Jr. on DACA Anniversary

U.S. Secretary of Education John B. King Jr. today issued the following statement on the anniversary of President Obama's 2012 announcement of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA).

"Four years ago today, President Obama announced that the Department of Homeland Security would implement Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), a policy that has helped over 730,000 young people gain access to education and workforce opportunities. Since DACA was established, the Department of Education has released several resources to assist DACA students and their families. Students such as Giancarla Rojas, who graduated from Radford University in Virginia in May with a bachelor's of science in international economics and is now helping other students by working at a non-profit organization that helps students find the financial aid they need to go to college. While we still wait for Congress to take action to enact much-needed comprehensive immigration reform, I want to take this moment to recognize the important benefits of DACA to our communities, schools, colleges, but most importantly, to the many students who, as a result of DACA, have been able to complete higher education and can now look forward to creating a brighter tomorrow for themselves, their families and ultimately, our nation. The Department stands with immigrant students and families every day, and will continue fighting to ensure that all children have equal educational opportunities, no matter their immigration status."
