Rangel: Immigrants Contribute To Our Nation

Statement

Date: June 15, 2016
Issues: Immigration

"I am proud to recognize the 4th anniversary of President Barack Obama's Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) initiative that makes it possible for many undocumented American youths who grew up in the U.S. and call it their home to stay and contribute to the success of our nation.

To date, more than 750,000 DACA cases have been approved, positively changing the lives of thousands of immigrant families in my congressional district. They can now safely come out of the shadows and live without fear of deportation or separation from their loved ones. DACA has allowed numerous young men and women to seek higher education and strengthen our workforce.

While President Obama's efforts to expand DACA and enforce Deferred Act for Parents of Americans (DAPA) is still on hold leaving millions of American families in limbo and at risk of being torn apart, we must not stop working to fix our country's broken immigration system. Without comprehensive immigration reform, we are jeopardizing the economic security and safety of immigrant families and our country.

I will continue to fight for undocumented immigrants who deserve a chance to be part of the American fabric. Opening doors for immigrants to become citizens is not only honoring our past, but also critical to the success of the present and future. Let us push for meaningful legislation that reflects America's legacy as a land of opportunity where everyone has a fair shake at achieving the American Dream."
