Rep. Kinzinger Reaction to State Dept. Press Briefing: Sickened by Inaction in Syria

Statement

Date: June 7, 2016
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Foreign Aid

During the State Department's daily press briefing yesterday, the Press Office Director, Elizabeth Trudeau, spoke on the ongoing crisis in Syria. While she called the regime's starvation technique unconscionable, she followed by stating that the State Department and the Administration "expect the regime to live up to its commitments and allow for full delivery of assistance to all besieged areas." Given that today's reports say Bashar al-Assad vows to retake every inch of rebel-held areas in Syria, Congressman Adam Kinzinger (R-IL) responded with the following statement:

"Over half a million innocent Syrians have died at the hands of Bashar al-Assad. Countless more are suffering from starvation at this very minute while perpetual airstrikes from the Assad regime and Russian forces continue to destroy Syrian towns and take even more lives. Over five years of Syrian Civil War have passed, where President Obama failed to enforce his own red line after Assad, the President of Syria, used chemical weapons on his own people.

"It is disgusting -- and it is sickening to know that this Administration and the State Department continue to sit back and wait for these dictators to live up to their so-called commitments. What assurances does the White House have from Assad or Putin? They never kept to the "ceasefire' from February, bombing civilian neighborhoods and hospitals without signs of stopping. This is inhumane, it is unacceptable, and something of this magnitude deserves more than empty words."
