Feinstein Statement on Sea World Decision to End Orca Shows, Breeding

Statement

Date: March 17, 2016
Location: Washington, DC

Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) today released the following statement on Sea World's announcement that it would end captive breeding and the use of orcas in entertainment shows. Sea World and the Humane Society of the United States also announced a partnership to improve the health of the oceans and marine life:

"Sea World today made the right decision to end its captive breeding program and cease its use of orcas in entertainment shows. I'm pleased that CEO Joel Manby is taking this giant step forward.

"Today's announcement means the generation of orcas currently in captivity in the United States will be the last. Orcas are highly intelligent and social animals and I strongly believe this is the right thing to do.

"The partnership between Sea World and the Humane Society of the United States will focus on combating illegal fishing and improving the health of our oceans. Illegal fishing has devastated whale, shark and fish populations and it's great news that Sea World and the Humane Society will work together to address this problem."
