Collins, King Applaud Bangor Science Bowl Team, Wish Them Luck in National Competition

Today, U.S. Senators Susan Collins and Angus King congratulated the Bangor High School Science Bowl team for advancing to the Finals of the 2016 National Science Bowl and wished them luck in the national competition, which will be held in the Washington area from April 28th -- May 2nd.

"We congratulate the Bangor High School Science Bowl team on their extraordinary run this season, and wish them the best of luck as they work to build on their impressive record at the National Science Bowl later this month," said Senators Susan Collins and Angus King. "STEM education has never been more important than it is today, and as these students prove, the sciences can open doors and create new opportunities. The team has made Maine proud."

The five members of the Bangor High School Science Bowl team are students Conor Thompson, Isaac Robinson, Paige Brown, David Rubin, and Tyler DeFroscia. The team is coached by Cary James, the school's Science, Technology and Engineering Department Head, and Earth Science and Astronomy teacher John Cangelosi. Bangor High School's Science Bowl team also competed in last year's national finals.

The National Science Bowl® is supported by the Office of Science in the U.S. Department of Energy. The academic competition focuses on the principles of mathematics and science, and engages teams of students in a series of rapid question-answer series based on those disciplines. Along with the competition portion, students will also attend science seminars and workshops.

The Bangor team is one of 68 high school teams and 45 middle school teams to have won their regional competition and earned the chance to compete at the national finals for prizes and awards. More than 550 students from 46 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands are expected to participate in the national competition this year.

The national competition events will be held in Washington at George Washington University's Lisner Auditorium, and in the nearby Maryland communities of Chevy Chase and Bethesda at the National 4-H Youth Conference Center and Bethesda Chevy Chase High School.
