Today, Rep. Lois Capps (CA-24) applauded the White House's announcement that the Summer Opportunity Project will be coming to Santa Maria, California this summer. The project titled "Santa Maria Summer Jobs & Beyond" will provide up to 260 young adults in Santa Maria with summer and year-round jobs by working with six local partners. The federal program will work in conjunction with the County of Santa Barbara Workforce Development Board

"Providing our young people with employment opportunities means not only a steady paycheck, but also important job skills that will serve them for the rest of their life," Capps said. "Making critical investments in young adults who serve our local communities is one of the most important things that we can do as a nation, which is why I am incredibly excited to see this innovative federal program coming to Santa Maria."

The Santa Maria program is one of 11 Summer Opportunity Project programs announced today. Overall, the Summer Opportunity Project will provide $21 million in Summer and Beyond grants to programs throughout the country to connect disadvantaged young individuals with employment opportunities that will help them develop essential workplace skills and establish pathways to postsecondary education.
