US Senator Kelly Ayotte (R-NH) today expressed her strong opposition to the Senate potentially considering the Marketplace Fairness Act (S.698) this year. She released the following statement:
"There's nothing fair about the so-called Marketplace Fairness Act, which would turn businesses in New Hampshire and across the nation into tax collectors for nearly 10,000 taxing jurisdictions," said Senator Ayotte. "I will fight any plan by Senate leadership to move forward with this misguided and destructive Internet tax collection scheme. Our small businesses rely on the Internet to tap into growing markets, expand their operations, and create jobs, and we should do everything in our power to keep the Internet a driving force for jobs and growth."
Senator Ayotte has helped lead congressional opposition to the mis-named "Marketplace Fairness Act," which would require Internet businesses to collect sales taxes for nearly 10,000 jurisdictions across the country. In November, she led a group of Senators in sending a letter to Senate and House leadership urging them to reject any legislation to impose onerous online sales tax requirements that would hurt online retailers in New Hampshire and across the nation.
