CONGRESSMAN YOUNG OPPOSES THE MARKEY AMENDMENT TO STRIP ANWR FROM ENERGY POLICY ACT OF 2005

Alaska Congressman Don Young today voted in opposition to the Markey Amendment to the Energy Policy Act of 2005 (H.R. 6). This amendment would strike drilling in the Artic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) from the Energy Legislation. This amendment failed by a vote of 231 to 200.

"I'm quite pleased with today's vote concerning the Markey "Malarkey" Amendment that would have stripped out ANWR. This was the largest vote margin we've had on this issue. Once again we were able to expose the fictitious presentations made to dupe the American public into believing that drilling is impossible. The support I received from my colleagues is a testament to their belief in the importance of our nation being independent of foreign fuel."

"Mr. Markey and his supporters used this issue merely as a fund raising mechanism. Their false passion tactics have stymied this legislation for years and has denied the American public their right to lower gas prices and the number of jobs that drilling would add to this nation's economy. Mr. Markey talks about how the coastal plain of ANWR is the biological heart of the Refuge. He speaks emphatically about the poor wildlife in the refuge and how they will suffer along with the pristine wilderness if we drill. The fact is he has never been to ANWR to see first hand for himself. I am pleased that the House, the Senate and the Administration have spoken. Finally we will soon see the realization of drilling," said Congressman Young.
