DelBene Calls for Protection of Endangered Species

Location: Bothell, WA

On Earth Day, Congresswoman Suzan DelBene (WA-01) called for the conservation and protection of wildlife during a panel discussion to highlight the need to end poaching and address the effects of climate change on animal health.

"Threatened or endangered species face so many manmade risks -- we should be much better stewards of our planet," DelBene said. "Earth Day is an important opportunity to highlight environmental and conservation efforts because preserving nature and protecting wildlife are critical to the health of future generations for all species."

DelBene was joined by representatives from University of Washington, the Sierra Club, Conservation Northwest and the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife.

While Washington passed I-1401 to increase penalties and prohibit the purchase, sale and distribution of products made from 10 endangered animals, more can and should be done to protect endangered species at the federal level as well.

DelBene has cosponsored the Conserving Ecosystems by Ceasing the Importation of Large (CECIL) Animal Trophies Act (H.R. 3526), the Global Anti-Poaching Act (H.R. 2494) and the Targeted Use of Sanctions for Killing Elephants and Rhinoceros (TUSKER) Act (H.R. 1945) to stop the killing of species proposed to be listed as threatened or endangered.
