DelBene to Court: Keep Families from Being Torn Apart

Location: Washington, DC

Congresswoman Suzan DelBene (WA-01) today issued the following statement as the Supreme Court heard arguments in United States v. Texas, a case that will decide the fate of President Obama's implementation of Deferred Action for Parents of Americans (DAPA) and expansion of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA).

"I hope the Supreme Court recognizes that the President took lawful action to help families being torn apart by our current system -- which everyone agrees is broken," DelBene said. "I'm confident that today's oral arguments will make that point clear, and allow the Court to put any further political ploys surrounding these actions to rest. Doing so would help create a climate where Democrats and Republicans can finally come together to work on a comprehensive solution that reduces visa backlogs, creates an earned pathway to citizenship and keeps families together."

The Supreme Court is reviewing the Fifth Circuit's decision to block the Secretary of Homeland Security from implementing DAPA and expanded DACA programs. DelBene joined more than 200 of her colleagues in signing an amicus brief calling on the Supreme Court to overturn the Fifth Circuit's ruling.

As a member of the House Judiciary Committee, DelBene has led efforts to enact comprehensive immigration reform by helping introduce the Border Security, Economic Opportunity and Immigration Modernization Act (H.R. 15) in the 113th Congress. She has also consistently said a long-term solution to fix our broken immigration system can only be achieved through congressional action.
