DelBene Signs Brief Urging Review of Texas v. United States

Press Release

Date: Dec. 4, 2015
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Immigration

Congresswoman Suzan DelBene (WA-01) today joined colleagues in signing an amicus brief urging the Supreme Court to review the Fifth Circuit Court's decision on Texas v. United States.

"Everyone agrees that our immigration system is broken, but the solution will not be found through litigation. The Fifth Circuit's decision wrongly hurts immigrant families whom we should be supporting, not deporting," DelBene said. "The President took lawful action to help families being torn apart by our current system. If the opposition takes issue with that, they should be willing to debate comprehensive immigration reform rather than relinquishing the policymaking to the courts."

More than 200 Democrats filed the brief on Thursday night arguing for review of the Fifth Circuit's decision to block the Secretary of Homeland Security from implementing the Deferred Action for Parents of Americans and Lawful Permanent Residents (DAPA) and expanding the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) programs, announced by the President as part of his immigration executive actions last year.

As a member of the House Judiciary Committee, DelBene has led efforts to enact comprehensive immigration reform by helping introduce the Border Security, Economic Opportunity and Immigration Modernization Act (H.R. 15) last Congress. She has also consistently said the only long-term solution to fix our broken immigration system will require congressional action.
