Congressman Tom Cole (OK-04) released the following statement after President Barack Obama announced that he will submit a plan to Congress to close Guantanamo Bay and transfer some of its detainees to the United States. The prison currently has 91 remaining detainees that are either suspected or known terrorists, including the mastermind of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

"As the president's time in office finally nears the end, he continues to advocate for the closure of Guantanamo Bay," said Cole. "Campaign promise or not, the dangerous terrorists at Guantanamo do not belong in the United States. Unfortunately, that's exactly what President Obama wants to allow by relocating some of the most notorious terrorists to prisons in communities across the country. I am confident that there is absolutely no chance Congress will ever approve such a dangerous and irresponsible measure that puts our national security at risk."
