Issue Position: Immigration and Discrimination

How often have you heard the phrase "We are a nation of immigrants, a melting pot of different nationalities" or some variation of this campaign speech? A slogan it is and a slogan it will remain. The truth is somewhat different. Our great country was founded by immigrants seeking greater opportunities, and relief from religious persecutions and taxation without representation.

There are some who advocate for the expulsion of all undocumented immigrants while others suggest some form of amnesty. The reality is that neither is an absolute choice, some combination of the two should be implemented to facilitate a reasonable approach to this challenge. Can we really expel millions of undocumented immigrants without causing severe family hardships not to mention economic hardships throughout many communities? On the other hand can our unprotected and porous border status continue as is? A formula to accommodate the challenge must be put together to address this. The formula must consider the porous border as a national security issue and take action to secure it. This step must be part of any solution as we cannot solve a dilemma without addressing the source of the issue. Second, there must be some formal recognition of the current undocumented immigrants through a state or federal identification system. This provides the immigrants and their families both legal recognition and provides for their protection from exploitation. Adults should receive work permits and some form of recognition so that they are able to legally provide for their families.

As a nation founded by immigrants generation after generation we must stop talking about building walls, rather we must tear down any walls and treat all our people with dignity and respect. Everyone comes to our great country for a better life and for opportunities to improve their lives and that of their families. With that in mind, we must focus on integrating and accepting the fact that we are all immigrants first generation or ten. We came here for the same reasons our forefathers did. We should celebrate our uniqueness and empower our children to do the same. With Pride Service and Honor we are all Americans first. A better tomorrow starts today.
