Congressman Pearce -- This is Not the Time to Gamble with New Mexican Jobs

Statement

Congressman Steve Pearce issued the following statement after President Obama released his FY 2017 budget proposal:

"New Mexican jobs depend on a responsible budget that restores certainty to American job providers. The President's proposal looks to increase our national debt to over $19 trillion, never balances, and increases budget deficits over the next decade. To make matters worse, the President's budget is directly targeting the safety, education, and livelihood of New Mexicans.

"Instead of supporting the domestic oil industry, this Administration is targeting it. It ends the reinvestment benefits for oil and gas producers and increases the cost of producing oil on federal lands. It also targets the consumer by proposing a tax increase of over $10 --a-barrel on oil which would drive the price of gasoline up by as much as 24 cents per gallon. This takes money away from a family's ability to buy food and clothing for themselves and their children. It will also dramatically impact the State of New Mexico's budget, which reduces the State's ability to build safer roads, improve school quality, and much more.

"Washington does not have a tax problem, it has a spending problem. The government does not need to raise taxes but learn to live within its budget. This is not the time to gamble with America's future. It is time to hold the federal government accountable for how it spends our tax-dollars and work to leave future generations with as many opportunities as we had. This is why I will support a plan which will increase jobs, reduce our debt, make America energy independent, and strengthen our national security. It is time we make America exceptional again," said Congressman Pearce.

The President's Budget Plan would increase spending by $2.5 trillion and raise taxes by $3.4 trillion over the next decade. Pursuant to the President's budget, the national debt will be more than double what it was when the President took office.
